A Sea Farewell That Mended a Family
This story took place many years ago, early in our journey offering ash scatterings at sea. It began with three siblings — a brother and his two sisters — boarding the yacht to honor the memory of their fourth sister, who had recently passed away.
What made this gathering unique was the tension beneath the surface. One sister hadn’t spoken to the other two in over 20 years. When the family arrived, they spread out — one sister stood at the stern chain-smoking nervously, another was at the bow trying to control her breathing, and the brother quietly climbed to the top deck to hoist a flag for the ceremony.
As the boat set out and we began to prepare the cremated remains with rose petals, we gently brought the siblings together to participate. In those shared moments — with the sea stretching quietly around them — something began to shift.
By the time we returned to shore, the change was unmistakable. The siblings were embracing and talking again. The brother even asked to purchase the flag he had raised — a symbol of the farewell — and gave it to the sister he hadn’t spoken to in two decades.
A year later, he called us again. His sister had passed. He thanked us not just for the ceremony, but for helping bring his family back together during that one, unforgettable journey at sea.
A Sacred Farewell at Sea
This story begins as we welcomed a small group aboard one of our more intimate vessels — four close family members. Others friend and family were gathered on shore to watch from a distance. The individual being honored was a respected Native American shaman, deeply loved and revered by the community.
As the boat drifted into deeper water, the air was filled with the scent of burning sage and the soft rhythm of spoken prayers. The moment was calm and ceremonial — quiet in reverence.
Then, as if summoned by the spirit of the ceremony itself, several dolphins appeared around the boat. They moved gracefully in a wide circle, as if blessing the farewell. Everyone, both on board and on shore, watched in awe. It was a striking and unforgettable experience — one of those moments the ocean sometimes gifts to those who are saying goodbye.
